WHAT IS CYTOMEL (TIROMEL) ?

Cytomel ( Tiromel )  is used in all cases where thyroid hormone should be given. It is used in the treatment of mild, moderate or severe thyroid hormone deficiency, simple goiter and diseases related to thyroid hormone deficiency.

It is also used in the suppression test to differentiate thyroid hormone deficiency from other thyroid diseases.
Instructions for proper use and dosage / frequency of administration

It is recommended to take a single dose of cytomel ( Tiromel ) daily. The dosage of thyroid hormones is determined by the reason for use, and the dosage in each patient should be personalized according to treatment response and laboratory findings.

Thyromel is taken orally.

Different age groups

Use in children

Treatment should be started with a daily dose of 5 micrograms until the required dose is reached.

5 micrograms should be increased at the recommended intervals.

Use in the elderly

Treatment should be started with 5 micrograms daily and the dose should be increased by 5 micrograms at the recommended intervals until the required dose is reached.

Special use cases

Renal / Liver failure:

There are no warnings about the use of cytomel ( Tiromel ) in kidney / liver diseases.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have the impression that the effect of cytomel ( Tiromel ) is too strong or weak.

If you use more cytomel ( Tiromel ) than you should

In case of overdosing, headache, irritability, sweating, acceleration of heart rate, increased bowel movements and menstrual irregularities may occur. Chest pain and heart failure may develop or exacerbate. For overdose treatment, the dose should be reduced or the drug should be temporarily discontinued if symptoms occur.

Talk to a doctor or pharmacist if you have used more than you should use from cytomel.

If you forgot to use cytomel ( Tiromel )

Do not take double doses to compensate for forgotten doses.

Effects that may occur when treatment with cytomel ( Tiromel ) is terminated

There is no information on the effect of terminating therapy with cytomel ( Tiromel ).

What are the possible side effects?

Like all medicines, people who are sensitive to substances contained in cytomel ( Tiromel ) may have side effects.

If any of the following occurs, stop using cytomel ( Tiromel ) and notify your doctor IMMEDIATELY or contact the emergency department of your nearest hospital:

• Difficulty in breathing,

• rapid breathing,

• chest pain,

• acceleration of heart rate,

• swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat,

• sudden drop in blood pressure,

• widespread and severe redness, itching, hives (urticaria),

These are all very serious side effects.

If you have one of these, that means you have serious allergies to cytomel ( Tiromel ). You may need immediate medical attention or hospitalization.

If you notice any of the following, notify your doctor immediately or contact the emergency department of your nearest hospital:

Fever, headache, dizziness, feeling tired, involuntary contraction of muscle

These are all serious side effects. Emergency medical attention may be required.

Serious side effects are very rare.

If you notice any of the following, tell your doctor:

• Increase in thyroid hormone – palpitation, flushing, sweating, hair loss, irritability, intolerance to heat,

• reduction in growth hormone – short stature, growth retardation,

• bone resorption – frequent fractures after menopause, bone pain,

• blood pressure height

These are mild side effects of cytomel ( Tiromel ).

Precautions before using cytomel ( Tiromel )
DO NOT use cytomel in the following cases

• In case of insufficiency of the adrenal gland that has been diagnosed but not treated

• Untreated thyrotoxicosis (excessive increase in thyroid hormone in the blood)

• In case of hypersensitivity to the substances in the drug

USE Cytomel ( Tiromel ) CAREFULLY In The Following Cases

• In Angina pectoris (chest pain and sensation of congestion), care should be taken when using it in patients with cardiovascular system disease and in the elderly.

• In patients taking anticoagulants, the dose of the drug should be readjusted.

• Diabetic patients may impair stability when taken in high doses.

• Do not use thyroid hormones alone or in combination with other drugs to treat obesity.

• Do not use thyroid hormones alone or in combination with other medications for the treatment of male or female infertility

Important information about some of the excipients contained in cytomel ( Tiromel )

Tiromel contains 60 mg of lactose. If you have already been told by your doctor that you are susceptible to certain sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicinal product.

Concomitant use with other drugs

■ When thyromel is used in combination with oral anticoagulants (anticoagulants), patients need to be monitored very carefully. Anticoagulant dose may need to be reduced.

■ Patients receiving insulin or oral glucose-lowering medication should be monitored very closely when initiating thyroid hormone therapy.

■ In patients taking cholestyramine (a drug that binds cholesterol in the intestine), there should be a 4-5-hour interval between thyroid hormone and cholestyramine applications.

■ Thyroid hormone dose may need to be increased if birth control pills are given to patients who are not functioning thyroid gland and who are receiving thyroid hormone therapy.

■ The effect of antidepressants may increase when used in combination with thyroid hormones. It was observed that the heart rhythm deteriorated during these applications. Thyroid hormone activity may also increase.
